What Ever Happened to the Nokia 3210

If you were born in the 90's you would know that the 3210 was all the rave back then. Yes Sir , if you did not have a 3210 to take to school, you would be ridiculed and treated as if you were living in some distant country where everybody lived under rocks. In the 90's the 3210 was King! Since the start of the Millennium we saw where the cell phone evolved in the Smart Phone ... a phone that could do just about anything other than fly. We somehow forgot about the phone that started it all. What happened to the 3210?

The 3210 was one of the best cellphones ever made selling over 160 Million worldwide. Some of the notable features include: Ringtone Composer, Speed Dialing, 3 Games, Green Back light and Interchangeable faces. Believe it or not, the 3210 is still around today and can still be used. While researching this phone, I came across a few on E-Bay and Amazon. Though the price is significantly lower than it was in 1999, you can still get good use out of this Phone. The greatest thing about the 3210 is that it is a hard phone. If it falls and "shells out" (as we say in Jamaica), all you have to do is put the pieces back together and its as good as before. If you have a Nokia 3210 and is wondering what to do with it ... use it! Call Digicel or Lime and ask them how best they can assist you and also ask if you same chip can be used. If you were a user of this phone what was your favorite feature? Which model did you have?

The Nokia 3210 was succeeded by the Nokia 3310 which is deemed as indestructible.
If you still have this phone , you have a gem. Take good care of it

Cell Phones Then Vs Now

The communication device known as the cellular phone or "cell phone" for short has been around for over 30 years. This device was created by Inventor Martin Cooper in 1983 and was made to replace the home phone so people could still communicate with each other while on the go. The Cell Phone has come a long way since inception; today we'll be looking at the Cell Phone back then straight up to now.

Cell Phones ... Then

Size
The devices back then were hardly "mobile" or "portable" as they were so big they looked like a hybrid of an over-sized walkie talkie or a small Radio with the antenna sticking out. Not only were they big, but they were heavy. I somewhat remember seeing one my Grandmother owned and it was heavy, I remember she had a small briefcase she used to store it. Back then, this device used to be called "The Brick". See photo below

Purpose

In the 80's, the only purpose of the cell phone was to make and receive calls. In those days, people actually thought it was strange to communicate this way as opposed to face to face. There were no Texts , I'm's or any other settings.

Talk Time

Cellphones back then would only last from 1 - 4 hours (when the Nokia came about ) and had a standby time of up to 8 hours.

Cell Phones ... Now

Size
Today, Cell Phones are much smaller and lighter. They can be carried in your hands ( if you so desire) or in your pockets or any place you choose to carry it.

Purpose
Today , Cell Phones are more than just that. Not only are you able to make and receive calls , but you are now able to send texts , check your e-mails , play games , take photos and the list goes on.

Talk Time

Up to 8 hours! That's an entire day at work and them some ( depending on how long your conversations are ) The standby time is up to 250 hours ( Apple ).

In conclusion, Cell Phones have come a looooong way. This is one of the examples of how our society has grown and evolved to suit the "changing times " and to also facilitate the needs of the people of this generation. It can be easily agreed that if it wasn't for those bulky devices back then, we wouldn't have the sleek designs of the smart phone that we all cannot live without.

5 Reasons to Buy a Samsung Galaxy Tab

By now it is pretty obvious that the coveted item on every body's list is the Samsung Galaxy Tab. Its almost like the Samsung line of products came with a vengeance to blow the champion I-pad completely out of the water. Here are 5 top reasons to get a Samsung Tablet.

1. It can make Phone Calls: The Samsung Tablet is great for making conference calls as it comes well equipped with front and back cameras. Because of this a phone plan is not needed. If you are a local person using Google Phone you might need to add credit but that is the least as compared with signing up with a Phone Plan.

2. Apps Run Better: The makers of this Tablet have created its own Android application for it to run on. Applications of this sort really come to life on the large Samsung screen. Application developers are now starting to create more apps for Tablets rather than Cell phones.

3. Wide Screen: Who doesn't like watching videos or playing games on a wider screen? The Tablet has a 10.1 Screen and a display resolution that goes up to 1280x800 and also includes a 4 way rotation. Most other Tablets only have a 2 way rotation, with the Samsung Tablet you can turn it diagonally and it still functions.

4. Own Social Hub: Well kinda ; This Tablet comes with its own Social Hub which features The Social Hub , Music Hub and The Reads Hub. This is like having your own Facebook , Limewire and a Kindle all in one Device that fits in your hands. These features are great to enhance your life and make things alot simpler.

5.Pricing: One would think with all the features this device is packed with, the price would be through the roof! The Tablet is moderately priced, you can get one anywhere between $399 - $499 (during the festive season) You can get one used at a much cheaper cost, even though I have no idea why a person would want to sell a Tablet.

Knowing Your Seller

When making purchases on a Classifieds type of website, there will be several sellers. These Sellers are from various parts of the Island and even from parts of the world. It is not strange for you to not know who these sellers are as they go by user names rather than a name like "John" or "Mary".

It is important to know about your seller when doing business online

Here are a few important thing everyone needs to know about a selling before doing any transaction online.

It is important to mainly do business with people who have pictures. If you've been keeping up with our posts , you would know why this is important. Another important thing to look for is the feedback . The Jamdeal website provides information about the seller pretty similar to E-Bay. Look for sellers who have 90-100% Positive Feedback rates. This is just common sense because it shows how well that seller interacts with clients and it makes sense to do business with a person who has a higher selling rate as opposed to one who has a rate of 40% or lower. It is important to get as much information you can about each seller you come across.

Ask the Seller and see how quick or well they respond. Let's face it, here in Jamaica providing quality Customer Service is not in our best interest. How many times have you bought something online then realized the person you bought it from went missing? It happens too often. If you see an item you like contact them and see how long they take to respond then when they do ask them as many relevant questions about the item as you can and see how well they answer. Do they seem informative , dismissive or shady? These are all things you should consider.

Finally, check the sellers complete background. Do a mini investigation , read reviews from other shoppers online and see if they sell other items. These days one can never be too careful. Ask around to see if any of your friends have made purchases from this person and what it was like.

The Importance of Having a Tablet

We cannot deny that Technology has truly advanced in the last 5 years. Computers are smaller and Faster to fit with the "Instant Age", where everything happens in the snap of a finger. Desktop Computers and Laptops are extinct (well almost). The latest sensation is the Tablet, brands like MAC , Windows , Google and even Leap Frog all have Tablets. Here are 5 important reasons to invest in a Tablet.

Portability: Unlike the Desktop and the Heavy Laptop , Tablets are extremely lightweight. They can be easily stored in your handbag, Backpack or Free Hand without anybody noticing. It is like having the world at your finger tips with just the press of a button. This is especially beneficial in a country like Jamaica , where unscrupulous people are attracted to you because of the size of your bag! A small compact Tablet can fit in a small handbag or messenger bag for the guys and to that unscrupulous eye, it would look like you are carrying a regular handbag. They are especially great for travel.

Battery Life: A top of the line Laptop can go up to 2 1/2 hours before it needs to be plugged in to be charged. What if there is no plug around to charge that Laptop when you are in the middle of a major Presentation? A Tablet can go for almost a full day without charging! Invest in Brands like Samsung , Galaxy Tab or an Ipad. Having to lug around all day with a bulky Laptop and a Charger in today's modern society is "no bueno".

Entertainment: Tablets are great for Entertainment. Whether you are a music lover avid reader or even a Blogger, there is a Tablet made just for you. Since a Tablet is basically just a large screen , it is great to watch movies. Imagine 1000's of movies saved to your Internal Memory without you having to download a movie each time.

Productivity: Students can find having a Tablet quite beneficial. Books are offered digitally which are cheaper then buying a Hard-copy for thousands of dollars. They are also great for the business professional who does Meetings and Presentations because of the quick start-up time. This takes the wait out of those presentations and give you more time to "pitch"effectively.

Price: Believe it or not a new Tablet is actually cheaper a new Laptop. All those features for a sleek , compact , "all in one" Computer at a cheaper rate you definitely can't beat that.

Tips For Buying A Used Cell Phone Online

Cellphones are one of the most requested items people seem to purchase online . People will tend to go after phones that are used are they carry a much cheaper price tag . Contrary to what you might think , phones are not sold because they are damaged but for a variety of reasons such as : For Cash, Looking for a Replacement Phone or they simply just want to get rid of that phone. For whatever reason you've chosen , here are tips for buying a used Cell Phone Online.

1. Make sure there are pictures of the Phone: Because you are not able to see the phone and even touch it for yourself , it is important to have something visual to go off. Be sure to look at there are pictures from all angles and they are clear.

2. Make sure there is a contact information: These days everyone is a business owner. If you see a phone that you really like , make sure there is valid contact information available. Check to see if there is an address , telephone number and even e-mail address . In these times one can never be too careful. Ideally, it is important to buy a Phone from a person you know.

3. Ask about damages: Again , this phone is not in front of you but on a screen. It is important that you ask the seller if there are any damages as people will embellish and try to sell you a phone that is not suitable. Especially ask about the screen and if the phone had any water damages. It is of utmost importance to ask the seller why they are selling the phone.

Blackberry is Dead

Back in the late 90's the Blackberry was King! We all wanted one and they were the highly sought after phones in Jamaica . If you went on the road and even just a part of that phone was showing , there was a guarantee that if you checked your pocket or bag that phone would be missing . Yes ! the Blackberry was King!

Today however, King Blackberry is dead. It has been replaced by the I-Phone and Galaxy. These phones are well equipped with all the features needed for the "Digital Age". The Problem with having a Blackberry in Jamaica is with all the "hidden costs" involved. Lets say you've started the week with $500 in credit. If you make two calls to the same network i guarantee that after that second call you will have under $100 . There is some technical error with the Blackberry Data Services even if you are not on a plan.

Another big issue with Blackberry is there seem to be a lot of faulty models. Any company will have bad products, however they choose to discontinue them as with the case of Apple with the Twentieth Anniversary Mac. Most of the models from the 8520 down is faulty , sure the responsibility is on the consumer to upgrade , but in these times who has funds just laying around to buy a new Blackberry each time one is released.

Chart showing the decline of Blackberry since 2008

Finally, with inept C.E.O's as the head of this brand , Blackberry could not stand a chance. The Blackberry does not stand up to other mobile phones in terms of the design , function-ability and the amount of users it has.

Are You a Blackberry user?
How is your phone holding up?

Tablets: Generic Vs Real

Move over Ultra Book and MacBook Air. It is the end of the year and the technology giants are going hard to put out the best Tablets to suit various audiences. Tablets are all the rage and are here to stay ( until they find a new device to top that ). In this age of technology everybody and their grandmothers have a Tablet, if you don't have a tablet be prepared to be treated like a leaper.

While some people choose to invest in the top brands like Samsung and Apple, there are some of us who choose a different route and purchase a generic Tablet. Here is how the generic Tablet matches up to the "Real" Tablets.

Price: A generic Tablet is a lot cheaper than purchasing an I-Pad or Samsung Galaxy Note. These brands will burn a hole into your pocket but the quality features you get is second to none. A generic tablet can run you anywhere between $74.00 to $180 Usd depending on the website.

Display/Resolution: These days even the cheapest generic Tablets seem to have a great display/resolution that are quite similar to that of a laptop or desktop. The "Chinese android" for example can be easily confused with an HP Tab because of the quality of the Resolution. The more traditional brands for example, Samsung has a clear, crisp, liquid display. The images and text look more realistic, however there is not that big of a difference as it compares to the generic brands.

Storage: This is where the Big name Tablets win by a landslide. The Samsung note for example has a quad processor, that's 4 rather than a dual processor. That little tablet can hold all your pictures from age 5 to 25 and then some! The generic Tablets on the other hand ... not so much. If you are a person who loves pictures or work in the Entertainment Industry, you might want to save your money and invest in a quality Tablet. Generic Tablets barely have over 8g memory. If you are looking to be a part of the "cool gang" and just want to have a tablet for having it sake , the generic Tablet is just for you.

Features: Brand name tablets are known for having great features, in fact most people who purchase Tablets, do so just for the features. Front and Back Camera, Home Movie ,being able to transcribe a hand scribble into a text that can be saved to your device. These are just a few of the features some of the more expensive Tablets come with. The generic Tablet like the Chinese version of the Android comes with a camera, that tilts your image no matter how straight you stand and also a few Google apps like maps. Because of the limited amount of memory, it makes no sense to download an additional apps as it might crash.

Tablets are great to have if you really need them. They are user friendly and loads quickly compared to Desktop and Laptop Computers. As it relates to choosing between Generic Vs "Real" Tablet, I will say it depends on your needs and of course your budgets. I bought a generic Chinese Android solely for the purpose of reading e-mails on the go and it works great for me.
